Photo Canvas Print Quality

Here at Roc Gallery + Print Studio we provide the highest quality work for your canvas prints.  One of the ways we ensure this is by specialising in the type of canvas print reproduction known as Giclée.  Simply put, Giclée is the process of creating canvas print reproductions of either original works of art or your favourite photo.  For more information on each of the components that goes into transferring your photo to canvas please follow the links below.  With all of these components combined your canvas print will have an estimated archival rating of 75+ yrs.

The Canvas

There a number of different types of canvas that can be used.  Most typically for your photo on canvas we choose a high quality heavy weight archival canvas which is best suited to photographic reproductions.  If you are reproducing art work we also work with an extremely high quality textured 100% cotton canvas which is best suited to artistic reproductions. This ensures that your treasured work will not only hold its brilliance for a life time, it will also hold its value.

The Inks

For photo on canvas print reproductions and canvas art reproductions we only use genuine Canon pigment inks in our Canon IPF8000 12 colour printer. The inks are of the highest quality with a 100 to 120 year lifespan (depending on hanging conditions).  We use a 12-colour pigment ink system with LUCIA inks which is designed to expand the spectrum of colour providing an extremely accurate colour reproduction.

The Stretcher Bars (frame)

For our canvas print frames we use top quality purpose built kiln dried stretcher bars sourced from renewable forests.  Our frames are joined by a professional underpinning system which provide for a very long lasting rigid product. These stretcher bars are less prone to the natural expansion, contraction warping that can be found in cheaper stretcher bars.

Depending on the style and size of the print, we have a range of different size Stretcher Bars available to use.

  • Mini = 18mm wide  -  for use with small canvas prints up to approx 30 x 40cm (special request)
  • Lite = 30mm wide  -  for use with medium size canvas prints up to approx 40 x 60cm
  • Standard = 32mm wide - for use with most canvas prints 40 x 60cm and larger

The following sizes are only used by request and incur a surcharge:

  • Large = 40mm wide - can be used with larger canvas prints
  • Maxi = 50mm wide  -  for maximum 3D effect

Any size print may be used with the wider frames by using borders or by accounting for a larger amount of the image being wrapped around the frame. To understand more about wrapping your image, please visit our learning centre or our photo on canvas blog .

The Finish

Once your photo on canvas has been printed, an extra finish is then applied in the form of a spray laminate.  This is always done with 3 layers.  The laminate acts as a protective layer to your print, protecting your canvas print from scuffs & UV, as well as increases the archival life - plus the laminate also gives that perfect finish to your canvas print.  Laminate is available in matt, satin, or gloss.
